Common Questions and Myths About Alopecia

There is much information available about hair loss and hair loss treatments. Unfortunately, there are an equal number of myths and misunderstandings. For people who suffer from hair loss, there are many questions which are asked about their problem and possible treatments.

One common myth about hair loss is that “Wearing a hat will cause hair loss by depriving hair of oxygen.” This is generally not true – but there is a caveat. Hair follicles receive their oxygen supply from the blood stream and not the air so wearing a cap will not deprive hair of oxygen. Wearing a very tight cap over time can cause a traction alopecia along the edges of the cap though.

For patients considering hair restoration, the question often comes up, “Is the procedure painful?” There is some discomfort associated with the procedure. This usually subsides by the second day after surgery. You will be given a prescription pain medicine. Most patients just take this on the day of surgery. Tylenol usually takes care of any discomfort after the first day. “Will I be black and blue with bruising and swelling?” While every patient is different, bruising and swelling are usually minimal. You will notice that over the course of the first week after surgery, you will have swelling that will go from your scalp to your forehead and down to around your eyes. This usually subsides very quickly. Finally, some patients question if they will have bandages after surgery. Every surgeon is different in their after care. Some place bandages for a day or two while others encourage patients to avoid bandages and cover the treated area with a hat.

While there are many questions about hair loss, these are some common questions that patients ask who are either balding or considering hair restoration surgery. At the end of the day, education and understanding are important before undertaking any kind of treatment.

For a person suffering from hair loss, the first step in treatment is diagnosis. Patients should search out a physician who can help to determine if the hair loss is caused by a medical condition which must be treated, or is a result of genetics which can be covered.
