Addiction to drugs and substances is a modern day epidemic. People are addicted to all kinds of substances ranging from illegal drugs, to prescription drugs and alcohol. While some people are able to overcome their addictions themselves, others need assistance. For example, people addicted to alcohol often need help and assistance to overcome this habit, oftentimes as an inpatient at a clinic. The first step in overcoming alcoholism is undergoing detoxification. Undergoing an alcoholic detox is not always the easiest thing for an alcoholic to go through. It is hard mentally, and difficult physically too, which is why people often need medical assistance and oversight for this first stage of their recovery. Recovering from alcohol addiction requires several different steps, ranging from the initial detoxification, through to counselling and therapy. However, before an alcoholic can be successfully treated, they need to be convinced that they need help. After this, they need to distance themselves from anything in their life that contributed to their problems with alcohol. This can mean things such as getting rid of all alcohol from the home, taking a different route home so they do not go by their favourite drinking pub, staying away from their drinking [...]

There are many factors that can make someone start to drink alcohol. These are some of things that started me off to the races with Alcohol. 1) PEER PRESSURE 2) EVERYDAY STRESS IN SOMEONE”S LIFE. 3) WORKING AT A JOB THAT IS NOT WANT YOU REALLY WANT 4) DEATH OF A FAMILY MEMBER OR A FRIEND. 5) FINANCIAL WORRIES. 6) NOT GETTING ALONG WITH A SPOUSE OR A FRIEND For an Alcoholic these few things mentioned above are just excuses and permission to drink alcohol. I am only saying this because these are the excuses I had used for my addiction to alcohol. I didn’t have the willpower or the strength inside to stand up to my problems head on, so I leaned on my crutch (alcohol) for the support. I”m sure there are far more reasons that people use for a excuse to drink, but, these where mine. I would think of anything to justify my addiction, and pick up that bottle. As we get older in life, some people such as myself start to look at ourselves and think of what we have done all through the years of drinking. We have somewhere down the line hurt someone that [...]

Going through alcohol detox is a big step, but a necessary one for those dependent on alcohol who want to know how to stop drinking alcohol and get their lives back in order. For those who are alcoholics, who cannot survive without a drink of alcohol, will need to go through their detox at a detox center. Detoxification flushes the toxins and poisons out of the body, and gets rid of all traces of alcohol. People who have become very dependent on alcohol will need medical supervision during their time of detoxification. Withdrawal symptoms of those going through with an alcohol detox vary, and depend a lot on how severe the alcoholism was. In someone who was very dependent on alcohol, symptoms can be severe and extreme, and they can even be life-threatening. Therefore it is important to receive medical aid and help, as otherwise the detox may not even work. Typically, when undergoing treatment for alcoholism, the patient begins with a detox and then moves onto rehabilitation. There are different options when it comes to the alcohol detoxification process, and it is important that the patient and doctor decide together on the best course of action. People’s reaction to [...]

Yep. Obviously, prohibition with alcohol could have told us that much. Whether or not a drug is legal has no bearing whatsoever on how addictive it is. Nicotine and alcohol are proof enough that addictive substances can still be legal. So what will happen if and when Marijuana becomes legal in the U.S.? If it comes to pass, then some who are recovering alcoholics will inevitably relapse. I already know for myself that I cannot use Marijuana successfully, because I tried to do so for a few months after getting out of rehab and staying off of alcohol. I was doing the infamous “marijuana maintenance program.” Needless to say, it did not work well. Eventually I got to a point where I was stressed out and frustrated and I wanted to self medicate. I could either go spend about 30 to 50 bucks on a bag, or I could spend about 5 bucks on a cheap fifth of vodka. And on top of all that, the marijuana really wasn’t really getting me to that place I wanted to be at. It was only “partially” medicating me, whereas I knew what a fifth of vodka would do over the course of [...]
